Exploring small towns is one of my favorite things to do! I love to drive, snapping photos of interesting things that move me along the way.
In January, I visited The Van Buren Event Center. I found this hidden historic gem nestled in the heart of downtown Columbia City, Indiana. Not far from Main Street with views of the city’s courthouse, The Van Buren has all of the old charm and unique architectural features you would expect from a building of that era.
The Van Buren Event Center
The Van Buren was built in 1900 as the Columbia City headquarters for the Masonic Lodge under the direction of Thomas R. Marshall, the Vice President of the United States. This building’s rich history lends to its original tin ceilings on the first floor and exposed brick walls on the third floor. The Van Buren Event Center has large and small venue rental spaces along with several business suites to accommodate just about any type of event.
I had the opportunity to take some photos at The Van Buren Event Center as part of my portfolio-building work. I toured each of the spaces and was impressed with the variety of rental options available.
The Ballroom
The Ballroom, located on the first floor, is the largest of the rental spaces at The Van Buren Event Center. The Ballroom is perfect for a large event like a wedding reception or graduation party. This long, carpeted room has tin ceilings, neutral-colored walls, and a food service area. It has a maximum occupancy of 500 guests without any furniture; 450 guests with limited furniture; and 250 guests with full seating, tables, dance floor, & bar service.
There is no charge for the use of tables and chairs, however, you have the option to have them set up for you at for additional charge. You also have the option to add a dance floor which includes the setup and tear down. There is an additional storage room for staging and an area for catering prep as well. Both men’s and women’s restrooms are also located conveniently within The Ballroom for easy access.
The Great Room
Located on the 3rd floor and accessible via stairs or elevator, the Great Room boasts a wall of arched, white windows and an exposed brick wall. The Great Room accommodates up to 81 people with tables and chairs. This large room has a ton of character, natural light, and views of the courthouse! Just outside in the main hall, you will find a men’s and women’s bathroom.
The Sunrise Room
The Sunrise Room is the second rentable space on the 3rd floor of The Van Buren Event Center. The Sunrise Room is the smaller of the two rooms on this floor with a maximum capacity of 44 people with tables and chairs. This room has beautiful, white-trimmed windows and exposed brick as well. The Sunrise Room is perfect for birthday parties, brunches, or other small get-togethers!
Business Rental Suites
The Van Buren Event Center also offers several business suites available to rent for business meetings, workshops, or small conferences. These three business suites, ranging from $300-450, vary slightly in size and are all located on the 2nd floor of the building. The business suites are also accessible via the stairs or elevator. With their convenient downtown Columbia City location, just minutes from highway 30, The Van Buren has a space for your next business event.

The Van Buren Event Center has two new spaces coming soon, The Martin Suite and The Community Meeting Room. But it’s too early to divulge any details!
