Learn Manual Mode

You’ve invested a small fortune in camera gear, lenses, and accessories, but do you know how to use manual mode on your camera?

Shooting in manual mode can seem daunting at first with all of the different settings and such. Get acquainted with the exposure triangle and start shooting in manual mode right from the start. Manual mode gives the photographer complete control over the light, aperture, and speed the photograph is taken, helping you to create the exact image you are seeing in your head.

Take Your Camera Everywhere & Shoot Daily!

I am sure you’ve heard it before…because it’s true! Practice makes progress so take your camera everywhere with you and shoot daily. Look for scenes, spaces, people, and things to capture in your daily life to hone your skills and familiarize yourself with your camera so that shooting becomes like second nature.

Explore Different Genres of Photography

Experiment with various photography genres such as landscape, portrait, wildlife, street, real estate, product photography, and more to diversify your portfolio and help decide what type of photography you love the most! Different genres of photography call for different lenses, settings, and editing techniques to make your photos the best they can be. Practicing each of these genres will build different photography skills, making you a better photographer and editor.

Create Personal Projects for Sharing

Create personal photography projects or styled shoots to add insight into your photography journey. This can be a great way to not only connect with potential clients, showing them where your passions and interests lie, but also allowing your creativity to flow without limits. No client wishes or demands, just pure artistic creation!

Collaborate with Models

Work with “models” of all ages, shapes, and sizes to gain experience and build a strong portfolio of portrait photography, showcasing your ability to capture people’s essence and personality. These do not have to be professional models, although sometimes working with seasoned models can help when it comes to posing and posture. If you are looking for a model for an upcoming shoot concept, you can host a model call on your socials detailing your photoshoot vision and offer free digital images if that is something that appeals to you. If it does not, shoot your own children, family, friends, and even pets.

Capture Candid Moments

Try capturing candid moments during your shoots to evoke more emotion and build on the “storytelling” of your images. This provides a more editorial type of photography that showcases spontaneous and unposed moments. Adding some shots of candid moments into your portfolio allows you to better capture your subject’s personality and true moments of expression.

Macro Photography

Showcase your attention to detail with macro shots of everyday objects or nature. Practicing macro photography is a great portfolio-building exercise because it encourages photographers to take a closer look at things they look at every day. Photographers have to be more creative in their search for subjects in their daily routine and capture them in an artistic and creative way.

Events, Weddings & Groups

Volunteer to shoot events, help another photographer as a second shooter, and practice with groups. Working with groups helps to display your ability to capture special events and moments. Taking photos of events and large groups takes a little more patience and organization, but the experience is invaluable!

Black & White

Experiment with black and white when shooting and editing for a classic look. Black and white photography forces you to focus on the composition of your photos and provides less distraction to the viewer, allowing more attention to the details, the light, and the shadows of the image.

Show Before and After Shots

Showcase your editing talents by including before and after post-processing shots to your portfolio to highlight your skills. Editing is an art in and of itself and it takes time to learn the right techniques to retouch faces and wrinkly shirts or enhance your subject’s background for the perfect photo. Before and after shots can also help to show potential clients your editing style so that they know what to expect when they work with you.

Specialty Photography

If you have an interest in pursuing clients for specialty photography such as drone work, video, or time-lapse photography, I encourage you to create some video content to show your experience with these particular skills to share in your portfolio, and on your socials, or website.

Quality over Quantity

Always keep in mind that quality supersedes quantity. Make sure you are highlighting only your best work. Add a variety of shots to your portfolio to best show your experience, but not so many that potential clients are overwhelmed with pages and pages of galleries to scroll. Update your portfolio regularly to keep it fresh and new with your latest works of art.
